Size matters ? Chris Corradino VS the photography's marketing industry.

Any professional photographer, author or craftsman, has been confronted, at least once, with a third judgment concerning his photo equipment. Indeed, in the collective unconscious, a serious photographer has to have "serious" material, to mean big equipment!

Photographer Chris Corradino, Chief Executive Officer and Senior Instructor at Photo Mentor in New York, a personal coaching service for photographers of all levels, explains why he sold his Canon equipment, and more than just explanations, is a real joke carried in the direction of the photographic industry.

He explains that full-frame cameras have lost the race against hybrids. One of the reasons being that Chris himself, selling photos through a high-end agency for several years, realized that his best-selling photos were taken with a modest Olympus omni d em10. Absolutely ! The entry-level model. These photos were photographed using the "live composite" mode, unique to Olympus, and impossible to compose from a SLR. In other words, a camera with a small 16-megapixel sensor would have allowed him to sell more photos than a full-size sensor. What to think about of course, especially if you compare the price of an om-d to full-format SLR giants Canon and Nikon. It is therefore satisfied with the results obtained by the micro sensor 4/3, through its sales, but also due to the weight gain inherent mirrorless. The range of optics, consistent and qualitative, allowing him, at lower cost, to equip himself at Olympus, but also Panasonic and Voigtlander.

"I think Canon and Nikon have totally missed the boat with their mirrors, Nikon is in second place and their sales figures are going down very well, because Sony has entered the game of" no mirror " , they decided to produce cameras with full-size sensors, so the optics are huge and do not reach the goal of being smaller cameras, I dare to say that their choice of lenses is rather disappointing. Why this jerk? Just to counter the marketing machines.

"Try it by yourself, go into a store and tell them you're looking for a professional-grade device, a Micro 4/3, or the most expensive full-format SLR - you already know the answer. it's their duty to mislead the commission, which is why I'm listing the benefits of the Micro 4/3 systems. My camera has a stabilization system that gives me five stops. This means I can shoot handheld at shutter speeds that are much slower than a SLR. This feature completely cancels out all the benefits of high ISO full-size sensors. For a trip to Iceland I rented a Panasonic f / 1.2 lens. Let me tell you that the bokeh (note: background blur due to the depth of field) was beautiful. So, tell me, where do I go wrong? I invite the trolls to be heard. I take more pictures, I sell more and I enjoy more of my work as a photographer. How can you still justify the extra cost and size of a system that does not match mine ? "

Can we really give him wrong ? I myself photographing essentially with a hybrid aps-c, so with a larger sensor than the micro 4/3 (multiplier x1,5), I often see the astonishment of people facing my equipment. And it's even worse for professionals, who are constantly trying to convince you otherwise, despite repeating that you are mainly reporting and street photography, hence the interest of a material less cumbersome. In addition, nowadays, high-end hybrids are widely held in terms of image quality in the face of SLRs. I think, that said, that everyone must test and apprehend the comfort that suits him. It's a matter of ergonomics specific to each photographer. So if in addition to that you save money, so much the better! Use them for a trip to Iceland, Rome, or New York. Because as the saying goes, the best equipment to take good pictures is a plane ticket!

In conclusion, I can only advise those of you who dream of becoming a professional photographer, that now is the perfect time to take the hybrid train on the move. And even if that's not the case, which I can understand, you must be very careful when listening to the recommendations of the "experts". In fact, you will have to go in the opposite direction of popular opinion. It's not easy when you just started, but remember what I often repeat on my blog, whether for your creativity or your opinion ...

Think outside of the box!
